Case Study - West Buckland School

I recently returned to West Buckland School, where I spent 13 years, to film their evolving sustainability programme with the school’s Sustainability Lead, Angus Calder. 🎥🌿 Our focus was on three key areas: increasing biodiversity through land use changes, reducing carbon emissions via a tree planting programme of over 4,000 trees, and enhancing environmental education by involving students directly in rewilding and conservation projects. Filming locations included Hatriss Lane — a medieval drovers’ path now part of a rewilding corridor — and the former golf course, now transformed into more than 20 acres of wildflower meadows.

Using a combination of aerial drone footage and ground-level filming, we captured how thoughtful land management is improving local ecology. A highlight was the visual contrast between traditional playing fields and newly rewilded spaces, clearly showing the impact of sustainable decisions. The project not only documents the school’s environmental progress but also tells a broader story of how education, biodiversity, and climate action can intersect meaningfully within school communities.
